Roseburg Man Arrested After False Report of Drive-By Shooting

Roseburg, OR – A 42-year-old Roseburg man was arrested Saturday night after a reported drive-by shooting turned out to be a false alarm. The incident began around 11 p.m. on December 28, when Roseburg police were called to the 400 block of West Fair Street following a 911 report of a shooting involving an armed male suspect.

According to the Roseburg Police Department (RPD), the caller claimed that the suspect had shot at their vehicle. However, upon arriving at the scene, officers encountered the suspect, later identified as Wesley Michael Thompson, standing in the middle of the roadway. Thompson allegedly ignored officers’ commands and became combative.

Police said that Thompson punched one of the officers in the shoulder during an attempted arrest. After a brief struggle, officers were able to subdue Thompson and take him into custody.

Following further investigation, police determined that no shooting had taken place. Instead, Thompson was found to have been involved in an altercation where he allegedly punched a vehicle and repeatedly pounded on the door of a nearby residence. The claim of a drive-by shooting was subsequently ruled unfounded.

Thompson was arrested on charges of second-degree disorderly conduct, harassment, and a probation violation. Jail records indicate that Thompson was taken to the Douglas County Jail, where he remained in custody as of December 30.

The arrest occurred under a detainer authorized by Thompson’s probation officer, officials said. He is expected to face further legal proceedings related to the probation violation.

No injuries were reported in connection with the incident, and the case remains under investigation.
