Portland Police Revise Traffic-Related Fatality Numbers for 2023 and 2024

Portland, OR – Portland Police Bureau (PPB) has released revised figures for traffic-related fatalities in 2023 and 2024, following an internal review that revealed a small number of deaths were double-counted in their initial reports. The corrected data highlights the following numbers:

  • 2024 (Year-to-Date): 65 deaths
  • 2023: 75 deaths
  • 2022: 68 deaths
  • 2021: 69 deaths
  • 2020: 59 deaths
  • 2019: 54 deaths
  • 2018: 37 deaths
  • 2017: 52 deaths
  • 2016: 44 deaths
  • 2015: 39 deaths

In a statement, PPB acknowledged the error in their reporting and expressed regret over the inaccuracies. “PPB regrets our errors in reporting,” the agency said in the press release. “It’s important to point out that PPB’s figures are distinct from numbers tracked by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). NHTSA’s count excludes crashes involving suicide, private property, non-public roadways, non-motor vehicles, medical events, and deaths that occur more than 30 days after a crash.”

The revision of the traffic fatality data for the past two years comes as part of the agency’s commitment to ensuring accurate and reliable reporting of such crucial statistics. While PPB’s data serves as a more localized reflection of Portland’s traffic-related incidents, the NHTSA uses a broader set of criteria that may exclude certain types of fatalities, including those resulting from non-motorized vehicles and medical events.

As of the most recent data, traffic fatalities in Portland have remained a significant concern, with the number of deaths showing a consistent rise over the past few years. The city’s road safety will continue to be a focus for local authorities, especially as the total fatalities for 2024 reach 65 by the early days of the year.
