Salem, OR – More than 2,000 young runners gathered at Bush’s Pasture Park on Saturday morning for the annual Awesome 3000 fun run, one of the most anticipated events of the year. With a sense of excitement in the air, participants of all ages, from elementary school children to teenagers, laced up their sneakers and took to the starting line for a day full of energy, enthusiasm, and community spirit.
The Awesome 3000 has become a tradition in the Salem area, bringing together local families, schools, and runners for a fun and friendly competition. Although the event is focused on participation rather than competition, the runners showed impressive determination as they tackled the 3K course, which weaved through the scenic park grounds. The route offered a perfect backdrop for the young athletes, with beautiful trees and open fields setting the stage for a memorable day.
“It’s incredible to see so many kids come out and be active,” said event organizer Rachel Turner. “The Awesome 3000 is all about encouraging youth to stay active and have fun. The energy here today is just amazing!”
In addition to the race, the event featured various activities and entertainment, creating a festival-like atmosphere that drew spectators and families to cheer on the runners. Local vendors set up booths, providing food and drinks, while music played in the background, adding to the celebratory vibe. For many, the event is more than just a race—it’s an opportunity to come together as a community and celebrate the spirit of youth fitness.
“This is my third time running the Awesome 3000,” said 12-year-old participant Emma Johnson. “It’s always fun, and I love seeing all my friends here. I didn’t win, but I’m happy that I finished the race and had a great time.”
While the focus is on fun, there were also a few standout performances from the more competitive runners. The top finishers, including several young athletes from local schools, were recognized for their speed and determination, but everyone walked away from the event with a sense of accomplishment.
The Awesome 3000 has grown considerably over the years, attracting more participants and fostering a greater sense of community. For many of the young runners, it’s the first event they’ve ever participated in, setting the stage for a lifelong appreciation for physical activity.
As the event came to a close, participants were treated to medals and a sense of pride in their achievement. With smiles on their faces and excitement in their hearts, the runners left Bush’s Pasture Park, eagerly anticipating the next year’s Awesome 3000.
