Salem, OR – Camas police are actively searching for a suspect involved in a string of thefts that occurred on Christmas morning. Authorities have referred to the individual as a “Grinch” following a series of criminal activities that began with the theft of a car.
According to police, the suspect stole a dark gray Mazda CX3, which bears a Washington license plate number BSD5166. After taking the vehicle, the suspect drove around the Woodburn area, stealing items from at least seven other cars. Among the stolen items were garage openers, a gift card, cash, and a cellphone.
The car theft has left local residents feeling shaken. Pritam Nandakumar, whose car was stolen, described the experience as deeply unsettling. “We felt very violated. Somebody coming into our neighborhood, which we feel is very safe, with tons of kids around and an elementary school just down the street, is disturbing,” he said.
Camas Police Chief Tina Jones explained that it is not uncommon for criminals to steal a vehicle, use it to commit additional crimes, and then abandon the vehicle in another location. However, she expressed hope that the stolen Mazda is still somewhere nearby and urged the community to stay vigilant in the search.
“We’re hopeful that the car will be found soon. If we have everyone looking for it, we believe we can locate it,” Jones said.
Authorities are asking anyone with information on the whereabouts of the stolen vehicle or the suspect to come forward. Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious activity in the area as the investigation continues.
