City Budget Committee Approves Plan to Restore Services, Expand Summer Amenities

Salem, OR – In a unanimous vote Wednesday evening, the city’s budget committee approved an updated financial plan that restores public services and extends community amenities, including the operation of splash pads and longer hours at public libraries.

The revised budget, expected to take effect in July, marks a significant shift from earlier proposals that included cuts to recreational and educational services. Instead, the new plan reaffirms the city’s commitment to maintaining vital programs for residents amid growing public demand for accessible summer activities and extended learning opportunities.

Under the approved proposal, all city-run splash pads will remain open throughout the summer as originally scheduled. The move was welcomed by families and local organizations who had voiced concern over potential closures due to budget constraints.

Additionally, the city’s public library system will see extended operating hours, allowing residents greater access to books, technology, and community programming. Library advocates praised the decision, noting the importance of public libraries in supporting education and digital equity.

The updated budget also includes the restoration of several city jobs that were previously on the chopping block. Committee members emphasized that preserving these positions was essential to maintaining service levels and supporting the local economy.

“This budget is a reflection of our priorities as a community,” said one committee member. “We listened to residents, and we responded by protecting the services that matter most.”

The budget will now move to the full city council for final approval. If passed, it will be implemented at the start of the new fiscal year in July.
