Ice Storm Warning for Salem and Willamette Valley: Dangerous Conditions Expected

Salem, OR – As an ice storm approaches, the National Weather Service is urging residents of Salem and the Willamette Valley to stay indoors and avoid travel in the coming days. The agency issued a dire warning Wednesday afternoon, emphasizing the life-threatening nature of the expected road conditions.

The ice storm is expected to begin early Thursday morning, between 4 a.m. and 6 a.m., and will continue through Friday afternoon. Freezing rain, mixed with snow, is forecasted to affect the region, with up to 1 inch of snow accumulation and up to 3/10 inch of ice.

Meteorologist Hannah Chandler-Cooley of the National Weather Service explained that the storm’s intensity had increased since earlier forecasts, due to a slight rise in the anticipated precipitation levels. With the added ice accumulation, the conditions are expected to make travel particularly dangerous.

The ice storm will impact the central and southern Willamette Valley, as well as the central Oregon Coast Range and its lowlands. The National Weather Service has highlighted that roads, particularly bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous. Pedestrian surfaces will also be treacherous, with icy sidewalks and walkways creating a risk for those who need to go outside.

In addition to dangerous travel conditions, the weather service also warned of potential power outages. The combination of freezing rain and ice could weigh down trees and power lines, making power disruptions a real concern for residents in the affected areas.

The National Weather Service has strongly advised against travel unless it is an emergency, urging people to stay inside and avoid putting themselves at risk. For those who must venture outdoors, extra caution is recommended to avoid accidents and injuries.

As the storm unfolds, officials are preparing for the impact, with additional updates expected as conditions develop. Residents are encouraged to stay informed and take the necessary precautions to ensure their safety throughout the duration of the ice storm.
