Oregon Flags to Fly at Half-Staff in Honor of President Jimmy Carter

Salem, OR – In a proclamation issued today, Oregon Governor Tina Kotek ordered flags at all public institutions in the state to be flown at half-staff, beginning December 30, 2024, and continuing through sunset on January 28, 2025, in honor of former President Jimmy Carter. This action follows a Presidential Proclamation marking the passing of Carter, who served as the 39th President of the United States from 1977 to 1981.

Governor Kotek reflected on President Carter’s enduring legacy, noting his contributions both during and after his time in office. “I deeply admired President Jimmy Carter and followed his work during and after his presidency,” Kotek said. “He exemplified optimism, an unshakable faith in the human spirit, and resolve to end suffering in his country and across the world.”

Carter’s post-presidential career, marked by his tireless efforts in humanitarian work, diplomacy, and advocacy for the underprivileged, was highlighted by Kotek. She emphasized his long-standing commitment to issues such as affordable housing, economic opportunities for women and people of color, and social services. Carter’s dedication to public service did not end with his presidency, as he continued to champion causes for the common good throughout his life.

In her statement, Governor Kotek also quoted a poignant passage from Carter’s 2002 Nobel Peace Prize address, in which he declared: “The bond of our common humanity is stronger than the divisiveness of our fears and prejudices. God gives us the capacity for choice. We can choose to alleviate suffering. We can choose to work together for peace. We can make these changes – and we must.”

Governor Kotek closed her statement by extending condolences to the Carter family, expressing the state’s collective sorrow, and honoring the legacy of a man whose life was defined by service, compassion, and a steadfast belief in the power of peace.

Oregon will join the nation in remembering President Carter’s profound contributions, honoring him with this symbol of respect until January 28, 2025.
