Salem, OR — Children across Salem will soon have greater access to books and literacy activities thanks to a new round of grants awarded by the Marion Polk Early Learning Hub. The funding aims to bring early reading resources directly to children in a variety of community settings, including flea markets, gyms, and other accessible locations around the city.
The grants are set to support dozens of initiatives focused on early childhood literacy, with the goal of helping young learners build foundational reading skills outside of traditional classroom environments. By distributing books and engaging learning materials in everyday community spaces, organizers hope to reach families who may face barriers to accessing educational resources.
“We want to meet children and families where they are, making literacy resources available in places they already visit,” said a representative from the Marion Polk Early Learning Hub. “This approach helps foster a love for reading early on and supports school readiness.”
The funded programs will include take-home books, interactive activities, and family engagement opportunities designed to encourage literacy development from a young age. Community partners involved in the effort include local nonprofits, schools, and neighborhood organizations committed to expanding educational access.
The Marion Polk Early Learning Hub, which focuses on coordinating early childhood services in the region, awarded these grants as part of its ongoing efforts to improve educational outcomes and close gaps in literacy among young children.
