Salem, OR – A Salem man has been accused of manslaughter following a deadly crash near Stayton on Sunday night that resulted in the death of a 16-year-old passenger and left three other minors with serious injuries. Authorities say the crash occurred when the vehicle, driven by the 20-year-old Salem man, lost control and veered off the road.
According to the Oregon State Police, the vehicle was traveling on Highway 22 when it went off the roadway, striking a tree. The impact of the crash was severe, causing fatal injuries to the teenage passenger, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The three other minors in the vehicle, whose ages have not yet been released, sustained serious injuries and were rushed to local hospitals for treatment.
The driver of the vehicle, identified as 20-year-old Ethan Lewis, was arrested at the scene and charged with manslaughter, as well as several other traffic violations. Investigators are still working to determine the exact cause of the crash, although speed and alcohol are believed to have played a role in the incident.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of life in this tragic crash,” said Lieutenant Kelly Collins of the Oregon State Police. “Our hearts go out to the families and loved ones of all those involved.”
Witnesses at the scene described the crash as a violent impact, with the vehicle appearing to have lost control shortly before it struck the tree. Emergency responders arrived within minutes, but despite their efforts, the young passenger could not be revived.
The incident has shocked the local community, with many residents expressing their grief and disbelief. “It’s just heartbreaking,” said one local resident, who wished to remain anonymous. “To think that someone so young is gone, and that so many others are hurt, it’s just so sad.”
The identities of the other victims have not been released pending notification of their families. Local authorities have asked anyone with additional information to come forward as they continue their investigation.
The driver is expected to appear in court later this week, where he will face the manslaughter charge along with potential additional charges related to the crash. Meanwhile, the community of Stayton, along with surrounding areas, continues to mourn the loss of a young life and hopes for the recovery of the injured minors.
This incident marks yet another reminder of the dangers of impaired or reckless driving, and authorities are urging drivers to remain vigilant on the roads, especially during late-night hours.
