PORTLAND, Ore. — River Road in Marion County was closed for nearly two hours Tuesday after a box truck failed to clear a railroad overpass near Orville Road, causing a significant traffic disruption. The truck struck the bridge around 11:33 a.m., becoming wedged in place due to the force of the impact. Photos of the scene show the trailer severely mangled, highlighting the extent of the collision.
According to Sgt. Jeremy Schwab with the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, incidents like this are not uncommon. “We typically receive a few calls each week related to either crashes or large trucks backing up, which creates a hazard,” Schwab told KOIN 6 News.
The overpass, marked with multiple warning signs, has been a known point of concern for drivers due to its low clearance. These warnings are intended to prevent vehicles from colliding with the bridge, but as demonstrated Tuesday, accidents continue to occur despite the signage.
When such incidents happen, law enforcement issues citations for any traffic laws violated, including those related to improper vehicle height. “Adhering to roadway rules and signage is crucial, as there are multiple signs warning drivers of the low-clearance bridge,” Schwab emphasized.
The crash required the complete closure of River Road until the bridge could be inspected for structural damage. Marion County Public Works assisted with closing the road and managing traffic flow during the incident. Such closures not only affect local traffic but can also create longer delays for commuters in the area.
Authorities remind drivers to always follow posted warnings and be mindful of low-clearance bridges to prevent accidents and minimize traffic disruptions.
