SALEM, Ore. — Authorities are investigating a deadly police shooting that occurred Thursday morning at the Salem Airport. The Oregon State Police responded to a call about a suspicious person at the Army Aviation Support Facility, located on the 1900 block of Turner Road SE.
Details about the incident remain scarce, but investigators confirmed that an altercation took place when a trooper confronted the suspect. During the confrontation, shots were fired, and the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.
“I was inside writing an email and heard a ‘pop, pop.’ My manager got up and went outside to check it out, and he came back and said, ‘That was definitely gunshots,'” recalled Kelsey Ginther, a witness who was at a nearby location. “When I went outside to see what was happening, the trooper was performing first aid on the suspect.”
Fortunately, no officers or bystanders were injured during the incident. Local authorities confirmed that the area around Turner Road SE was closed as investigators processed the scene. The road was reopened around 11:30 a.m.
The Oregon State Police have not yet released further details about the events leading up to the shooting or the identity of the deceased suspect. The investigation is ongoing, and law enforcement agencies are expected to provide additional information as it becomes available.
