Chemeketa Community College to Seek Voter Approval for $140 Million Construction Package in May

Salem, OR – After a failed attempt in November, Chemeketa Community College leaders are preparing to bring a $140 million construction package to voters in May, with the goal of modernizing the college’s aging buildings and improving the campus infrastructure. The proposed package seeks to address the growing need for updated facilities, enhance the learning environment, and ensure the college remains competitive in providing quality education.

The bond measure, which would require voter approval, is expected to fund a series of renovation projects, including upgrades to classrooms, labs, and campus-wide infrastructure. The college’s current buildings, many of which are several decades old, are in need of significant repairs and modernization to meet the demands of contemporary teaching methods and technologies.

In November, a similar proposal was put to voters but was ultimately rejected. College officials believe that with a more refined approach and clearer communication regarding the necessity of the renovations, they can garner the support needed this time around. According to Chemeketa’s President, the bond would also focus on improving accessibility and energy efficiency across the campus.

The $140 million package will likely be divided across various projects, addressing both immediate structural needs and long-term goals for campus sustainability. If approved, the funds would help Chemeketa maintain its role as a key educational institution in the region, providing students with state-of-the-art resources and a safer, more comfortable learning environment.

With the May vote fast approaching, college leaders are focusing on community outreach and education efforts, ensuring voters understand the importance of the improvements for future students and the broader community. As the college prepares for this next vote, it remains hopeful that voters will support the much-needed upgrades to the campus infrastructure.
