Salem Men Arrested for Organizing Speed Racing During Immigration Enforcement Protest

Salem, OR – Two men from Salem have been arrested in connection with organizing a street racing event during a protest against national immigration enforcement. The incident, which took place on the evening of February 1, 2025, initially began as a peaceful demonstration but quickly escalated into an unlawful street takeover.

Around 300 protesters had gathered in east Salem, with many holding signs advocating for immigrant rights, including messages such as “Immigrants Make America Great” and “Families Belong Together.” The protest, which took place at the intersection of Northeast Lancaster Drive and Northeast Market Street, was aimed at raising awareness about the nation’s immigration policies. However, as the evening wore on, the situation took a dangerous turn.

At approximately 8:30 p.m., the atmosphere grew more volatile as a group of around 50 people blocked the intersection and began performing reckless burnouts and drifting maneuvers in the road. Objects were reportedly thrown at vehicles, escalating tensions further. The intersection remained closed until nearly 11 p.m., though fortunately, no injuries were reported during the chaotic episode.

Salem police responded swiftly to the situation, arresting five individuals for various offenses, including reckless driving and disorderly conduct. Among those arrested were two men, aged 27 and 30, who are now facing serious charges for their role in organizing the dangerous speed racing event. Both men are accused of conspiracy to commit reckless driving, second-degree disorderly conduct, and third-degree criminal mischief.

The vehicles driven by the two men — a 2019 Dodge Charger and a 1999 BMW 328 — were impounded by police as part of the investigation. Authorities have emphasized the gravity of the charges, noting the risks posed to public safety by the illegal street racing and the unruly behavior displayed during the protest.

Salem Police Chief Trevor Womack described the protest as “unruly,” acknowledging that the chaotic events placed significant strain on local law enforcement resources. The department had to call in support from partner agencies to assist in managing the situation.

This incident highlights the growing challenges law enforcement faces in responding to protests and illegal activities that can quickly escalate into public safety concerns. The arrested individuals will face court proceedings for their actions, and authorities have pledged to continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the protest.
