Salem, OR — Straub Middle School in the heart of the city was evacuated earlier today following reports of a fire that was deliberately set in one of the school’s bathrooms. Authorities quickly responded to the scene after the fire alarm was triggered around 10:30 a.m.
According to fire officials, the blaze was confined to a bathroom on the second floor of the building. School staff, working in coordination with local fire departments, followed established evacuation protocols to ensure the safety of approximately 600 students and faculty members.
Firefighters were able to extinguish the flames within minutes of their arrival, and no injuries were reported. Investigators are currently reviewing security footage and speaking with witnesses to determine the cause and identify those responsible for starting the fire.
“We take incidents like this very seriously,” said Principal Rachel Johnson in a statement. “Our priority is the safety and well-being of our students, and we are grateful for the swift response from emergency personnel.”
Parents were notified about the evacuation shortly after it occurred, and many arrived at the school to pick up their children. Authorities have assured the public that the situation is under control, and normal operations are expected to resume once the building is deemed safe.
This incident marks the second time in the past month that a school in the district has been targeted by arson. The district has promised to review security measures and work closely with law enforcement to prevent further occurrences.
As the investigation continues, school officials are urging anyone with information to come forward. “We are committed to ensuring a safe learning environment for all students,” Principal Johnson added.
The school district has not yet announced any changes to the schedule for the remainder of the day, but parents are advised to stay updated through official communications.
