Washington County Deputies Arrest Two Men for Stealing Mail and Packages

Salem, OR – Washington County deputies recently arrested two individuals in connection with a string of mail thefts, with the help of an observant USPS mail carrier. The arrests followed a weeks-long investigation into the theft of a stolen or counterfeit USPS postal box key, which allowed the suspects to access mailboxes in the Cedar Mill and Bethany areas.

On Thursday, a USPS mail carrier, while on their regular delivery route, spotted two men in a white Subaru Crosstrek stealing mail and packages from the area. The quick-thinking mail carrier alerted authorities, leading to the arrest of 24-year-old Brandon Rummerfield from Portland and 31-year-old Michael Fischer from Battle Ground.

Both suspects now face several charges, including mail theft and identity theft. The investigation, which has been ongoing for several weeks, has uncovered multiple victims who have yet to be notified, according to officials. As the investigation continues, authorities have indicated that additional charges may be filed.

Deputies urge residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity in their neighborhoods. The case highlights the ongoing issue of mail theft, which has become an increasing concern for communities across the region.
