SALEM, OR — The Salem Police Department is investigating the death of a 5-month-old infant following an emergency call on Sunday afternoon.
At approximately 1:03 p.m., officers responded to a residence in the 300 block of West Pershing Street after the fire department received a report of an unresponsive infant. First responders arrived at the scene, and the infant was transported to the Salem Regional Medical Center. Despite efforts to provide medical assistance, the child was later pronounced dead.
Police Chief J.T. Panezott confirmed the death of the infant but declined to release additional details at this time, as the investigation remains ongoing. While the initial report did not mention the fatality, Chief Panezott clarified that the approximately 5-month-old female infant had, in fact, died.
Authorities are continuing to gather information as part of the investigation, and further updates are expected once more details are available. The cause of death has not been disclosed, and police are working to determine the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
